Bahati Hamisi

Bahati Hamisi is a 15 year old boy who lives at Bukumbi with his Aunt Vumi in the Kalwande dormitory. His attendance at school has been good and he is described by his teachers as being ‘a bright boy’. However, in his recent school examinations he came 61st out of 84 - which was disappointing, and something our Education Co-ordinator Fay wanted to investigate.

After talking with his teacher, it seemed Bahati’s sight was not very good. In fact, he had to come right up to the blackboard in order to read it. So, with permission from the Centre and with an accompanying teacher, we were able to bring him in to Mwanza town to get his eyes tested.

Dr. Kalisa saw Bahati, he seemed quite nervous but sat and did as he was asked, reading the board of letters with different lenses. The diagnosis was short sightedness - very simple and easy to correct! Bahati now has new glasses, and although he was initially rather shy and nervous about wearing them, he can see the board much more easily. This will be a tremendous help with his learning and achievement levels – which of course, Fay will be monitoring!

Bahati’s eye test and glasses cost 46,000 Tanzanian Shillings, which is only £20. Such a small amount, but enough to help a boy get further in his education.

Without donations from people like you, helping children like Bahati would be impossible. If you are able to donate to our work, please visit our on-line giving facility at www.justgiving.com/bridge2aid/donate
