Lucya

Like many people in Tanzania Lucya is not sure how old she is, but remembers her mother carrying her on her back around 1942 when the war was happening. After her parents died, she went to beg and live on the streets of Mwanza town. Lucya was among the first group of people to be taken from the streets and given a home at Bukumbi Care Centre when it opened in 1974. She remembers when she arrived every person being given a bed, mattress, sheets, a plate and that they were cooked tasty food. That was 33 years ago, and she is still living in the same room, although many of the other things disappeared along the way. Lucya says that she is happy that she is safe and among friends. Seeing the renovation and care that is ongoing at Bukumbi gives her hope that these improvements are here to stay.
