What We Do
Tito Joseph

After his parents and brother died, Tito Joseph, who is disabled through leprosy, was advised in 1997 by the local doctor to move to be near his remaining brother and wife at Bukumbi Care Centre. For eight years he lived there quietly but this changed when he was asked to vacate his room for a man and wife who were given priority. Tito then moved into the disused toilet in Mpapua dormitory and has lived there for the past 2 years. Although he didn’t like this he said it was ok until the water pressure recently improved and the broken, blocked toilets began to fill with sewage. We were told of his situation and tracked him down to chat about the reasons he was living there and also the health risks posed by the room he called ‘home’. We persuaded him to move into Sijanoa dormitory and spent £28 on a new mattress, sheets, pillow and mosquito net. He moved in and when we saw him next he was sitting quietly on his bed reading his bible. He still takes his food over to his sister-in-law to cook and eats with his brother, but he enjoys the comfort of the clean room, good bed and cupboard to keep his things safe. A spiritual man, Tito said that in the Bible, God tells people to wait and be patient as He will send someone to rescue them from their terrible situations. He said that B2A were the people he was waiting for, they were sent by God to rescue him as there was no way he could have changed his own situation without God’s help. |
