Bukumbi Diary - April 2008
9th April 2008A busy week last week, firstly our new Locum Anthony Windibank (pictured) visited Bukumbi to see the work taking place there and also a trip up to the school. Mama Tabu was measured up for a new mobility aid which will help her move around much more easily. She is always busy weaving and making mats. On Thursday we did our maintenance check. At the moment Bukumbi has been without water for 9 days so washing of sheets and nets has not happened. Lake water is being bought up for the toilets but it is really not clean water. The water problem was being addressed and hopefully resolved this week. Ngete (pictured), the young man who helps clean Sijaona and Wafadhli had been working in some very broken flip flops not ideal for cleaning toilets so he was very happy with his new wellington boots that should keep his feet nice and clean! Mr Bundala has agreed for English lessons to take place at the centre and in the next few weeks we hope to see a small number of students improving their English skills. (JT). |

21st April 2008Last week had some ups and downs! First of all on Tuesday we were upset to see that some of the ladies were not keeping there rooms clean and there were a lot of cockroaches – however the following day after the buildings committee had met and where we had spoken about the problems, the nets and the cupboards were clear of the lovely little animals! The biggest problem the community is facing is that there has not been water for weeks and even though there have been attempts to fix it, it means that the community have had to buy and use lake water. Therefore washing sheets has not been the biggest priority! The workmen are trying to fix the problem but things can take a while! A new Lady called Mbalu Malunde has moved into Wafadhili and was sleeping on a thin piece of foam. With the help of Sister Anna she is now sleeping on her brand new mattress and has new sheets. She was very happy with them. The work at Kigongo school is going well and teachers are making and using some new resources to assist them with their teaching. (FM) |
