What We Do
Bukumbi Children’s Education – can you make the difference?
Bridge2Aid supporters currently fund the education of children at Bukumbi through our educational sponsorship scheme.
This is a strictly managed project where individuals commit to funding a child’s education through secondary school or vocational training for the entire period (2-4 years). All the children that entered the scheme in 2009 are doing really well and have embraced the opportunity for an education wholeheartedly.
In January 2010, three more children will finish primary school. We are seeking funding to enable them to attend.
You must commit to fund the child for the entire period of their education, and you can part fund or fund the complete cost. You can pay in a lump sum or by monthly standing order.
Education is the very best chance these children have of building a secure future free of the poverty trap.
Details of the children we are seeking funding are below. If you are interested, or would like to know more, please Email Fay.
Vocational Students 2010
Kabula (15), Naomi (15) and Felix (16) have all just finished Kigongo primary school and are awaiting the results of their Standard 7 exams. For children from Bukumbi Care Centre the chance of further education means a chance that they can support themselves and their families in the future and not be dependant on support and aid from the centre.
The most appropriate route of education for these students would be vocational training, Felix wants to pursue carpentry and Kabula and Naomi want to study sewing. These courses last for two years and costs cover their fees, accommodation, food, travel, uniform, visits and materials for the courses.
To support these children will cost £35 per month. Supporters will receive information quarterly on how their student is progressing.
Further education for these students is a huge opportunity and a way to change their futures!
Felix Samwel
Felix is 16 years old. He lives just outside of Bukumbi Care Centre with his mother. His father used to work at Bukumbi looking after the farming areas. He became ill and lost his sight and sadly died. Felix still has members of the family who live in Kalawande block. His mother does not work and the whole family are dependant on support from the centre and the small amount of money that his brother makes in town.
Felix is waiting for the Standard 7 results which are due on 24th December. This will then tell us whether or not he has enough marks to enter into secondary school or whether he will take the vocational route. If he does not achieve the marks for secondary then he would like to study carpentry.
Felix is a quite boy who has not had a big amount of guidance and support from his family for schooling, however he has tried his best. Further education would be a huge opportunity for Felix meaning that in the future he would be able to work and support himself and his family.

Kabula Hamisi
Kabula is 15 years old. She lives in at Bukumbi Care Centre in Jumbe Block with her Grandmother and one of her younger sisters.
Kabula’s mother lives in the village just outside the centre. When Kabula was born her mother also lived at the centre but then she moved out leaving Kabula to stay and help care for her disabled grandmother. She is one of 5 children, the 3 other siblings live with her mother.
She has never known her father and for support her mother farms on a small plot of land.
Kabula is waiting for the Standard 7 results which are due on 24th December. This will then tell us whether or not she has enough marks to enter into secondary school or whether she will take the vocational route which would be studying sewing. From her teachers though it looks like the vocational route is more likely.
Kabula is a very quiet girl but has shown great perseverance in her studies wither her attendance being 100% many months this year. Further education would be a huge opportunity for Kabula meaning that in the future she would be able to work and support her family.

Naomi Bahati
Naomi is 15 years old. She used to live at Bukumbi Care centre with her family until 2 years ago. She now lives with her Mother and Father just outside the centre. Her father has suffered from leprosy as well as her late grandmother. When I first met Naomi a few years back she lived in a small room with her mother and father and the 7 children. It was very cramped and they needed more space. So they have small house just outside the centre and survive by her father going into the city to beg.
Naomi has 3 brothers and 4 sisters, the eldest sister Lucia already has a baby but she is still trying to carry on her studies. Felista another sister is completely school phobic and I have worked with her to get her to school. Unfortunately with little success as she also helps the mother around the house and the small farm land than they have.
Naomi is waiting for the Standard 7 results which are due on 24th December. This will then tell us whether or not she has enough marks to enter into secondary school or whether she will take the vocational route which would be studying sewing. From her teachers though it looks like the vocational route is more likely.
Naomi is a happy girl and wants to learn. Her attendance in the last few months has been good and she was very pleased with her attendance certificate that I gave her!
Further education would be a huge opportunity for Naomi. If she does not study further then she will just at home with her family being dependent on the small farm and begging.
